ABO Exam Practice Test

The 2024 pass rate for the ABO certification exam was 64.0%. More than a third of candidates didn't clear it on their first attempt, which says less about the material being unreasonable and more about how unevenly the American Board of Opticianry weights its six content domains.

Ophthalmic Optics alone is 25% of the exam, 31 questions, the largest domain by a clear margin, and it's math-heavy: Prentice's Rule, vertex distance calculations, prism relationships, PD measurements. Ophthalmic Products and Dispensing Procedures each take another 20% (25 questions apiece). Together those three domains are 65% of the test. Instrumentation takes 15%, and Ocular Anatomy/Physiology/Pathology/Refraction plus Laws, Regulations, and Standards split the remaining 20% evenly at 10% each.

One correction worth flagging if you've seen it stated elsewhere: scoring is criterion-referenced, not a fixed percentage like "70% to pass." The standard can shift slightly based on the specific question set administered. Don't anchor your prep to a published cutoff number that doesn't actually exist.

Candidates with 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience or completion of an optical training program tend to pass at higher rates, though neither is formally required, only the age and diploma requirements are mandatory. Testing runs in quarterly windows throughout the year.

Given a 64% pass rate, the gap between passing and not often comes down to time spent on the math-heavy Ophthalmic Optics domain specifically, not general knowledge gaps.
